Harvey's Brief Disappearance
When I was 12 years old I realized that I could no longer find Richie Rich, Casper or Hot Stuff comics anywhere! It was kind of shocking, because they were my favorite ones and I totally loved them. After asking around at several comic shops I found out that they weren't publishing comic books anymore. I was sad... but a few years later I was delighted to find that Harvey Comics returned after some reorganizing at their company. This was the first issue I picked up in 1986, and it was a sweet reunion indeed!
Synopsis:
This issue of Hot Stuff contains 4 full-length stories, 4 one page stories and a ton of "We're back!" ads. In "Groosom Gulch Is A Gas!" Hot Stuff finds himself in a ghost town with some really tough inhabitants who aren't afraid of him. Later on he finds another character (a gingerbread boy no less!) who is tougher than he is in "The Mischievous Kid." In "Fire Water" Hot Stuff gets a hot, fiery drink from his Aunt Clinker which he then uses to take care of a thieving ogre, a show-off statue, a slow plane and finally his own tail. The issue ends with a Stumbo story where our favorite giant is given a check up by a government doctor who refuses to do anything the easy way!
My 2 Cents:
- I'll admit that I'm biased towards Hot Stuff comics, but I still thought this issue was a fun one to read! There is just something irresistible about a cocky, diaper-wearing devil who both causes trouble and gets into trouble. I don't think I'll ever get tired of these stories!
- I don't know what kind of "reorganizing" Harvey Comics did during its interim, but the art in this issue looks exactly like it did a few years earlier. Not bad, not great either - it was just about status quo for the time.
- Why does Hot Stuff always have to act so tough? The majority of the stories in this issue were about him being mean to others, or others being mean to him. Oh well, they were still a blast to read!
