A Sign Of The Early 1980s
After reading a review of G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #1 over at Comics Bronze Age I was in the mood to read me some G.I. Joe comic books! I had forgotten (or, more likely, didn't realize) that these books reflected the right-leaning political sentiments of the day. I had to smile at the contents, but it was a great walk down nostalgia's lane as I recalled not only one of my favorite comic books of my childhood but also my some of my favorite toys!
Synopsis:
The Joes, with the help of the FBI, have discovered a para-military group in rural Montana. Hawk and Grunt go in to become "undercover recruits" while Snake-Eyes watches from outside the compound and searches for its weaknesses. It doesn't take long before the 3 Joes discover the group's plot to start a nuclear war by bombing a Russian city. When Hawk and Grunt get caught checking out the new tanks, Snake-Eyes has to come in to save the day! But to their dismay they learn that the group's crazy leader has set not 1 but 2 bomb plans in motion, and now it is up to the entire G.I. Joe team to stop the plans before World War III is started!
My 2 Cents:
- I wasn't too impressed with G.I. Joe #3, but I thought the story is this issue was a lot more fun. Somehow the idea of crazy terrorists plotting to start a war with nuclear bombs never gets old!
- Overall the art was pretty good, but I was extremely annoyed when a soldier was shot in the left leg in one scene and treated for the right leg in the very next panel! Sheesh - c'mon people!
- I actually enjoyed the smaller focus this issue, with just 3 characters getting most of the story's attention. Don't get me wrong, I like all the team but it is nice to get a little more depth on a few of them.
