Good Trade!
Back in the early 2000s I was selling a lot of my comics on ebay, and a few sets I even offered a trade option. Well, one guy took me up on that and traded me his Avengers #7 for a set of my Ultimate comics. Even though it isn't a high grade copy I still think I got the better end of that deal! This is my second reading of this issue, and I still think it is awesome!
Synopsis:
This issues starts with Iron Man on trial for previously ignoring a call from the Avengers. Serious stuff, and after they find him guilty they sentence him to... wait for it... a 1 week suspension from the Avengers! Nooooo! Whatever will he do? (Go home and watch TV, it turns out) Meanwhile Odin is banishing Enchantress and The Executioner to Earth forever. And once they arrive they team up with Captain America's nemesis, Zemo, to drive a wedge between the Avengers. And when Cap and Iron Man are out of the way Enchantress casts a spell on Thor that makes him see his teammates as enemies. A big fight ensues (in which Giant-Man crushes some innocent buildings!) and eventually Thor realizes the error of his ways and sends the 3 villains away in a space warp created by his swinging hammer. Whew!
My 2 Cents:
- This was a really fun story to read, with classic Stan Lee dialogue - gotta love that!
- Jack Kirby's art, as usual, was just fantastic! The action scenes, the crouching figures, the expressive facial features and hand gestures were just classic and totally awesome!
- Yes, there are some corny Silver Age moments - such as Cap using magnets to catch a ride on Zemo's jet from South America to New York - but even those were fun, in a classic comic sort of way.
- Another thing I love about reading the original old comics is the ads. Can you imagine paying just $1.75 for a 12 issue subscription to The Avengers in 1964? Or selling copies of Grit for just 5¢ each to earn up to $5 a week! Fun stuff.
