Do You Ever Want To Play Old Games?

Every once in a while I get in the mood for a good simulation type game. The first one I ever played was SimCity 2000, which I played on my roommate's Mac back in 1994. I loved that game, even though some friends and family used to question the "point" of the game. There really wasn't a point, other than to have fun building a cool city!

Tycoon Memories

My Castle themed park!

After SimCity I played Railroad Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon and Transport Tycoon - all of which I really liked. So, after visiting the local zoo last month, I got in the mood to play Zoo Tycoon again. However, I had lost one of the CDs for my copy, and besides, getting it to play on a modern computer looks like a lot of work. So I decided to buy RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 and play it instead! I got the deluxe edition from gog.com for under $10, and then used OpenRCT2 to play it on my Windows 11 laptop. I must say that OpenRCT2 is great, and makes it run like a charm on my machine!

A Modern View Of An Old Game

This game was released 23 years ago, in 2002. But one of the advantages of being older is that old games don't bother me and I still consider them to be fun. So I fired it up, and over the past three weeks I have played through the first three scenarios. It was really fun to build a cool theme park and see people flock to it! I take great satisfaction in that. The rides were cool, and overall it was a really fun experience. After playing through a few scenarios it started to feel a little bit repetitive to me, so I am slowing down on the amount I play now - which gives me ample time to write about it on my blog! It did keep me busy through some slow weekends, and I must say that successfully completing a scenario and seeing all the park guests turn and clap was a great treat! However, I did not like keeping up with park maintenance very much. Constantly hiring people to take care of the ever-increasing trash and ride breakdowns got a bit tedious, so I cheated. One nice thing about using OpenRCT2 is that you can access the cheats menu and take care of those tedious maintenance things with one click! That was awesome!

So, if you like casual sim type games, then give RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 a try. Be aware, however, that it will probably make you want to go to a theme park and really critique its design!
