I have been a big fan of American Football for many years - ever since I was 10 years old and in 3rd grade! However, I became an even bigger fan of the National Football League (NFL) last decade when my sister-in-law invited me to join her family's fantasy football league. Well, now I am proud to say that even though it took me 13 years, I am finally the champion of our fantasy league!
Thirteen years is a crazy long time! You'd think that number would be bad luck, but no - I've actually had good luck with the number 13 throughout my life, and that proved true this year when all my hard work (but mostly luck) paid off. Yeah, it's true, the reason I won is mostly because of luck. Regardless of what all those online fantasy web sites tell you - "It is a skill-based game!" - it really is mostly luck, and therefore I consider it to almost be a type of gambling. I mean sure, I picked a few players who were good and were projected to score lots of points. However, there are so many variables that depend on so many things that luck is the biggest factor - by far.
A good case in point for this is that I had a few weeks this year when my team did terrible - I mean, like, really bad. However, I won those matches because my opponent's team had worse luck than I did. So the luck of the draw and which teams I played on which weeks was a factor. Also, I had some players who were not projected to do very well this year, but then the first string players on their teams got hurt and they were suddenly elevated to a much more active role - and they ended up doing great. See, you can't predict stuff like that, no matter how much skill you have.
Maybe I am just feeling a bit embarrassed because I feel like there were other fantasy teams in our league that were better than mine, but were not as lucky. Oh well, I'll take the win because heaven knows there have been plenty of other years where my team was pretty good but had rotten luck. So everyone else in my league can suck eggs because I am the champion! Well, at least for now, until my luck runs out next year. :-)
