Tigers and Apes and Boys, oh my!

My older sister picked this comic book up for me about 10 years ago when she purchased a suitcase full of comics at a Las Vegas yard sale. I always thought it looked kind of dumb, and I never really wanted to read it until lately. Having this blog has made me want to experience a wide variety of comic books, so I figured it was time to give this one a try. Plus it was drawn by Jack Kirby - how could I pass that up?

Fun and Loathing in New York!

This comic had a few amusing little mis-directions in it! Take the cover, for instance - there were several things that struck me as funny, and which I doubt I'd see now-a-days. Check out the Hobgoblin icon in the top left corner - he's saying "It's great! Steal it!" What? I'd like to see a modern publisher put that on their cover! Or how about the fact that Marvel announces this issue as a "normal-sized 250th issue!" But my favorite is that line "Behold the face of Death! Behold... Hobgoblin!" Why? Because, sadly, you don't really get to see the face of Hobgoblin in this issue! You can tell Marvel was having fun stringing their readers along on this storyline. Oh well, it's still a great comic!

The Adventurous Archie Series!

After reading about this series in Comics Buyer's Guide #1696, and learning that this was the adventurous and mysterious Archie series, I dug through my back issues to see if I had any copies. Lo and behold I did - so I figured I'd give it a go and see how it rated now that I understood a little bit more about the series. Here's what I thought about it...

A Grand Parade

Have you ever seen a parade with a tank in it? I don't think I have. All the parades I've been to have the boring military vehicles - like the troop carriers, the ambulances, the fire trucks and such. I would totally love to see a state-of-the-art tank roll down the road in front of me! Oh well, here is a story where that exact scenario happens. I didn't see them throwing any candy though!

Another Famous Harvey Comic

I've mentioned before that I grew up reading Harvey comics, and that they are a big reason I love comic books so much. Anyway, I thought Casper was cool but he wasn't my favorite Harvey character - that honor belonged to Hot Stuff. Casper was definitely the most famous of Harvey's characters though, and even now, years after the comics stopped being published, you can still find proof of the popularity of this friendly ghost!

Friends Then Enemies

I wonder how many enemies in this world actually started off on relatively good terms with each other? It seems like a common thread that people who get along reasonably well can end up hating each other with a burning passion when they perceive that the other one has intentionally hurt them. The world of comics and super-heroes is no different it seems, and in this issue we learn how Superman's biggest enemy came to dislike him so much.

I have, and usually I feel a bit disappointed and cheated that I expended so much emotional energy on something that wasn't even real! Oh well, better that than a nightmare eh? In this issue Akiko, our favorite 4th grader, has just such a dream.

Raiders Of The Lost Stamp?

After reading Uncle Scrooge and the Prize of Pizarro as the first comic book review for this blog, I realized that I enjoy adventure stories - especially ones that are set in the jungle. This comic is another classic adventure story from the early days of Disney comics. It reminds me of the Indiana Jones films, but with Donald Duck and his nephews filling in as the down-on-their-luck main characters. This is an excellent book and a prime example of how classic comics can be better than modern ones!
