The CrossGen Universe Begins!

So, I was a big fan of CrossGen Comics when they first appeared back in the year 2000. I followed all the main titles and several of the later ones. The company put out some cool stuff, and they (supposedly) treated their employees with respect. So you shouldn't be surprised when I tell you that I was devastated when I heard that they were going under and that they owed money to lots of people. It was truly a shame, but I figured after all these years it was time to give some of their comics another try and see if I still enjoyed them. Yep, turns out I did!

Daredevil #158 cover

Daredevil #158

  • Date: May 1979
  • Publisher: Marvel Comics Group
  • Cover Price: 40¢

  • Notable Notes: 1st Frank Miller Daredevil art, also the origin (and death) of Deathstalker!

Lanky Frank is a Big Deal!

The first page of this issue literally introduces us to "Lanky Frank Miller." It is obvious that Marvel thinks this upstart artist is something special, because he is mentioned again in the Bullpen Bulletins. According to Wikipedia Miller had drawn a couple issues of Spider-man, and asked to work on Daredevil because he saw a way "to do crime comics with a superhero in them." Yeah, looks like things worked out pretty well for Lanky Franky and his crime comics!

The seductive blood sucker makes a timely appearance in this issue of Thor, and is immediately drawn to the beautiful Sif. Can't say I blame him though, but will she be worth the price of her angry boyfriend? Hmm, my money's on Thor.

Devils!

Hot Stuff comics were my earliest comic reading experience. My mom used to buy them for my brother and me when we went on long car trips, and I would blast through them. It must have been here that I picked up my fascination with devils and demons. I'm not a devil worshiper by any means, but I've always thought they were cool characters in stories, movies and most of all Dungeons & Dragons! Reading this comic reminded my why I started thinking they were cool!

Classic Captain America

Some of the things that first drew me to the Captain America comic books (many years ago) was how he looked and acted. I loved that fact that he was a true American hero and totally looked the part. This issue (and really all of volume 3 so far) reminds me of how I used to feel, and that is a good thing. I really enjoyed reading this issue, and here's why:

Good Trade!

Back in the early 2000s I was selling a lot of my comics on ebay, and a few sets I even offered a trade option. Well, one guy took me up on that and traded me his Avengers #7 for a set of my Ultimate comics. Even though it isn't a high grade copy I still think I got the better end of that deal! This is my second reading of this issue, and I still think it is awesome!

One of the Best Comic Book Series Ever!

I first encountered an issue of Akiko in the late 1990s, and totally fell in love with it. Over the next many years I tracked down all 52 issues of this excellent series, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading through them. In fact the series was so good that I read it to each of my kids when they were but young 'uns who climbed on my lap and begged for a bed-time story. Guess what? They loved it too!

The Art of Daredevil:

I'm a huge fan of Daredevil, and was a little bit disappointed back in 1999 when Marvel decided to start the series over with volume 2 and a new numbering scheme. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed the series even more! Things got even better when David Mack was brought on to the series and I discovered his beautiful talent for the first time. This story was one of my favorite of the whole run - how could I not share it with all of you!

  • Notable Notes: Conan - the redeemer of a city?!

Conan'll Be Back, Baby!

I'll admit to not being very schooled in the history and stories of the famous Conan. My first association with the character was the 1982 movie starring none other than the Governator: Arnold Schwarzenegger. So maybe I'm not the best person to judge the accuracy of this comic, but I can tell you what I thought about this comic - and here's a hint: I wasn't too impressed.

The Beginnings of Oracle

Have you ever wondered why Barbara Gordon / Oracle is in a wheel chair? (Or at least "was", until the New 52 re-launch) Here is the infamous story from the late 1980s in which we find the disturbing answer to that question.
